Here are the highlights from Minister of National Education Nabi Avcı’s interview:

“We have appointed 37 thousand teachers in August”

“We have appointed a total of 37 thousand teachers to various parts of Turkey in August. 70% of these appointments in other words, 26 thousand of these teachers were appointed to cities located in Eastern and Southeastern regions of the country. There were claims in the media that a majority of these teachers would be hesitant to go to these cities but only 40 of our newly appointed teachers asked to be excused. In short, 25 thousand 960 new teachers started their duties in these cities.

“We are foreseeing the appointment of 30 thousand new teachers in February”

All appointments to state positions are allowed with the Budget Law which should be passed by the Parliament and permitted by the Ministry of Finance. Due to this reason, as the final number of appointments will be determined by the Parliament, we are expecting that our Ministry will be able to make 30 thousand new appointments in February.

“Advisor teachers will accompany newly appointed teachers”

“Teachers who will be appointed in February will have the opportunity to receive orientation and on the job training throughout the second semester. Each newly appointed teacher will have an advisor teacher who has at least ten years of experience in teaching and they will have the opportunity to attend their classes.”

“Teaches who are appointed to eastern and southeastern regions of the country will learn the culture of their new place of duty. They will learn basic terms of mother language of children in the region. Teachers will learn basic terms that will allow them to communicate with them.”

Number of students per classroom is below 30

“There are some private schools that have different and better opportunities when compared to state schools. But there are some state schools which have better qualities when compared with some private schools. Due to this light, it is not right to make a generalization. But if we are going to talk about general figures, we can say that, we have dropped the number of students per calssroom below 30.

“One of every two teachers working today area appointed by our government”

“We have doubled the number of teachers serving at schools. We have appointed 510 thousand new teachers in the past decade. This means that one of every two teachers working today area appointed by our government. We have prioritized technical and vocational training. Turkey has exceeded OECD average in terms of students receiving vocational and technical training. We have allocated 8 billion and 300 million Turkish Liras from our budget this year for vocational and technical training.

“We have ended the theft worth of 14-15 billion liras by transforming preparatory courses to schools”

The FATİH Project is the largest educational technology of the world. But it is criticized as it had ended the theft worth of 14-15 billion liras by transforming preparatory courses to schools. Those who had good intentions have already transformed their prep schools into regular schools and this figure has already exceeded 1500.

EIN (Education Information Network) is the content component of the FATİH project and it is the largest education portal of the world. There are tens of thousands of supplementary educational materials.

“Supplementary courses at weekends are free”

“We have supplementary and refresher courses at the weekends. Students make their application for these courses via EIN. According to the most recent figures, 4 million 306 thousand 858 students are attending free supplementary courses. Our teachers have the opportunity to download any supplementary educational material from EIN and use these during the courses.”

“Applications for transformation ended on September 1, 2015. 12 preparatory courses transformed into preschoosl, 16 of them transformed into elementary schools, 211 transformed into secondary schools and 1222 of them transformed into basic secondary schools. Moreover, transformation of 371 preparatory courses is still continuing. As you see, we have offered various alternatives to preparatory courses for transformation.”

Teacher Academy

As the Turkish Armed Forces and the police force have academies, we are also planning to establish a higher education institution that will provide real expertise training for teachers.
